The building is easier when you know which side of the security line you are on and what your next handover will be.

STEP 01

The two sides of the terminal

Landside is the public part of the airport: entrances, check-in desks, bag drop, ticket help and some transport connections. Airside is the controlled passenger area after security, and in some airports after border control as well. Leaving airside can mean repeating steps.

The airport’s official map is more useful than a generic travel article because terminals and transfer routes can change. Keep the map for the specific airport and date in mind when choosing a connection.

  • Find check-in before you search for a gate
  • Notice whether you need to cross a border zone
  • Use official airport signs when the route differs from memory

STEP 02

Big hub or smaller airport?

A large hub may offer more connections, lounges and rail links, but it can require long walks and terminal transfers. A smaller airport may feel simpler but have fewer alternatives if transport or weather causes disruption. There is no universal winner; match the airport to your day.

For families, mobility needs or an early departure, a short ground journey and clear layout can matter more than a small difference in the flight time.

STEP 03

Leaving the airport

Follow the airport’s official guidance for airport trains, buses, taxis, rental cars and parking. Prices and schedules change, and the best route depends on the arrival time and luggage. If you have an onward train or ferry, leave a buffer for baggage and finding the correct station or bus stop.

When a city has several airports, confirm the airport-to-city route before choosing the flight. “Arriving in the city” is not the same as arriving near the city centre.
