A gentle walk through the airport day.
Read this page once before your trip, then use the shorter checklists when the day arrives.
Before you leave
Look at the booking and say the airport name aloud. Many cities have more than one airport, and a similar-looking destination name can hide a long ground journey. Check the departure time, terminal information shown by the carrier, the baggage allowance and the documents required for the route.
If the airline offers online or mobile check-in, follow its current instructions. Save the boarding information somewhere accessible, but keep in mind that a document check can still happen at the airport.
- Confirm the airport, date and name spelling
- Check the current entry and transit requirements
- Measure the bag and remove restricted items
- Plan two ways to reach the airport if practical
At check-in and security
Check-in may happen online, at a kiosk, at a desk or at bag drop. The exact deadline belongs to the airline and can differ by airport or document type. If you need assistance, arrange it through the airline and airport channels ahead of time.
At security, follow the local instructions for liquids, electronics and outer layers. Keep medication and documents easy to explain. The best packed bag is not just small; it is easy for a human being to inspect.
At the gate and after landing
Once airside, check the display and the airline’s current message. A gate can change, and the walk may be longer than the terminal map suggests. Boarding is staged and may close before the scheduled departure time, so do not use the departure time as your gate-arrival target.
On arrival, follow signs for baggage, transfer or exit. If a bag is missing or damaged, report it before leaving the baggage area where possible. Keep the reference and receipts for necessary expenses.
Official resources belong to the final decision.
